Runner Spotlight: Daniel Pincham-Phipps

I took up running 5 years ago, after seeing my friend run the Benfleet 15, and began by completing the NHS Couch to 5k. I suffer from COPD asthma and running helps me enormously by giving me 98% oxygen in my blood.

I became involved with Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) a number of years ago and ran a workshop for the children in which they painted a large canvas between them. An exhibition of donated artworks was auctioned to raise awareness for retinoblastoma. The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) is the only UK charity solely dedicated to helping families and individuals affected by retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer that affects babies and children, mainly under the age of 6. I am running the five 10k races of The Race Organiser Essex Cross Country Series to raise awareness for retinoblastoma and the work of CHECT.

As an internationally known artist with artwork in collections all over the world, I am proud to do something that means so much me. From 1979-1992 I worked as a cartoonist for the Beano, Dandy, Topper, Beezer, Whizzer and Chips plus Scooby Doo and TV Friends. This influenced my contemporary painting, and I have exhibited in many group and solo exhibitions.

About Childhood Eye Cancer Trust

  • Provides support and information to families and individuals

  • Raises awareness among health professionals and the public

  • Funds research into the diagnosis and treatment of Rb

  • Influences policy to improve services for Rb patients

CHECT provides lifelong support to families from the moment their child is diagnosed, throughout treatment and beyond.

Fundraising Manager Diane Emery said: ‘We are so grateful to Daniel for raising funds for CHECT!  Daniel has been a super supporter of ours for a long time and we were thrilled to welcome him to our Members’ Weekend where his workshop for our young Rb members was one of the highlights.  CHECT receives no government support and relies entirely on voluntary income to continue our vital work and we are behind Daniel every step on the way.  We applaud him for undertaking all five races of the  Essex Cross Country Series to raise not only funds, but awareness of this little known but fast growing and aggressive cancer.’
